Novel H1N1 influenza has arrived in Oregon. To date, nearly all cases have been mild and similar to illness due to seasonal influenza. The Public Health Division will continue surveillance to monitor for any change in the extent or severity of the disease. Guidelines for clinicians, health care facilities, and the public are available at flu.oregon.gov.

Strategies to limit transmission of respiratory infection that you can share with patients and the general public include:

1. Wash your hands often or use an alcohol-based rub;
2. Cover you mouth with a tissue or your sleeve when you cough or sneeze;
3. If you are sick, go see your doctor if worried about your symptoms, but otherwise stay home until the symptoms resolve to avoid exposing others to illness.
