Overview
Through the Governor’s Sustainability Initiative and his commitment for Oregon’s participation in the Climate Saver’s Initiative, Governor Kulongoski has established a series of reduction targets for energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions across state government operations.  Agency Chief Information Officers and Information Technology staff can play a major role in helping Oregon state government achieve those targets by putting the people, processes, policies and technologies in place to better manage the agency desktop environment.

On behalf of the State Chief Information Officer, the DAS Enterprise Information Strategy and Policy Division hosted a Desktop Power Management Forum held in two seperate sessions on December 9 and 11, 2008.

The first session on December 9, began with an overview of Governor Kulongoski's Sustainability goals and objectives and Oregon's commitment to the Climate Savers Computing Initiative.  The session also included presentations from the Governor's Sustainability Policy Advisor, the State CIO, the DAS Sustainability Coordinator and multiple subject matter experts covering Oregon's full sustainability continuum at a high level and all aspects of desktop PC power management.

The desktop PC power management presentations touched on available chip sets, operating systems, hardware and power management-focused software; revealed the current Oregon policy and practices related to desktop power management; and recommended the best power management practices to emulate.

The second session showcased the power management-focused software of four vendors - 1E, Lakeside Software, Faronics and Verdiem - each of whom had formally responded to a state Request for Information.  Each of the vendors presented the business and technical aspects concerning their respective product lines and related services.
